Golden Rule of Travel: You’re traveling. You will have to sacrifice daily comfort and regiments, but I promise it is always worth it.
On the Plane
Health & Beauty
If you have space, pack classic travel toiletries. Shampoo and body wash can be used as soap. Lotion or moisturizer can help with dry skin, removing eye makeup, or a leave in conditioner. Toothpaste can also be used on a blemish overnight.
I rarely wear makeup but I do like to look alive for photo ops. My 3 essentials for traveling light are:
Bandaids and Neosporin
If the country you are going to requires any medication, be sure to pack all the dosages
Cheap straightener - It helps tame both wrinkly hair and wrinkly clothes (depending on the fabric). Also, it's a good first test for the outlets and adapters. If it blows, it’s not a major loss.
Dry Shampoo - I am a card carrying member of the Church of Dry Shampoo. This will be in every suitcase, on every trip. Showering daily may not be realistic (Golden Rule), this will help keep up appearances.
Passport - You don’t want to be that Broad City episode… Double check your passport expiration. Some countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months after your departure date.
Phone chargers and converters, extras of both don't hurt
Either a fanny pack or small bag with a zipper that can be worn close to the body.
Luggage lock - The door to your room should lock, but a separate lock on your luggage never hurts.
Phone Plan - SIM card - Wifi
If you must stay connect (or prefer to stay connected, like me) here are your options:
Phone Plan: You carrier may offer reasonable plans that allow you to travel overseas for a small data fee. This is typically what I do. This means you can use your same number and all the apps on your phone. Be sure to keep track of your data usage so that you do not get overage fees.
Prepaid SIM card: Once you are in the country, purchase a pre-paid SIM card to insert into your phone. This will allow you to use a phone within the country. You can usually purchase these in the airport once you land (Be sure to check your landing time. If it’s not within typical business hours, you may have to wait until the next day and purchase elsewhere.) Once you instal the card, you’ll have a new number.
Wifi is your best friend. Link up everywhere you go to save your data. You can also complete your trip without data, only using wifi. It can be done!
